Most of the religions which exist today believes in a concept of Heaven or Hell. Some believe that if we live a life of goodness, then we will go to Heaven or else to Hell. Some one else believes if we do what is prescribed in holy texts we go to Heaven.
But what is the Heaven or Hell in reality? Is there some place outside this earth where we will travel once dead? Stories intended to fantasize believes so. Even if anybody believes this way, they are guided by immature thoughts of childhood or they have not seriously thought about it. After all all religions have come to existence to make our lives more meaningful which science could not always answer.
Based on Upanishads and some reasoning I am writing this. I may err in my reasoning but I believe that Upanishads can't err just because it is time tested approach to illuminate oneself. The role of Upanishads has been to spread thought to everybody who have not thought otherwise. For instance the Katha Upanishad (Pronounced Katoupanishad) talks about a boy talking to death god (Yama) and understanding what the fuzz is all about. Every Upanishad talks about certain aspects of life.
Before we get into the thought of Heaven or Hell, we must understand something about ourselves. Our body may die, but our life force cannot be destroyed. It is an assumption that is followed by those who believe in Heaven or Hell, for without this Heaven or Hell must be within ourselves; in this very life we are living. So lets take the assumption that we won't be destroyed on death.
This life force (which continues with us even after death) cannot be destroyed, it cannot thus be created. This is one attribute of the supreme power we call God. That which cannot be seen or felt, that which cannot be created, that which cannot be destroyed is God. This can be the only attribute of God.
Now let us think about Heaven or Hell. If our life force separates from this body, that should carry same attributes as God. So why would there be punishment for God? What remains when we are alive, is the only place where we are not felt about the attributes of God. The state before we are born, after dead is the state of pureness, formless, and non-destructible. The real Hell is when we do not identify our pure self. We all have all time in the world to watch some sports activities, news around us, chit chatting, etc. But do we really spend at least some time for what we are?
We rarely spend time on ourselves. For those who disagree, I am not talking about taking care of the seen body. Our thoughts are also one form of us, we may agree with our thoughts, we may disagree with our thoughts. In our present form, we can just identify where our intellect is coming from. If we attempt to go back to our thoughts, we will reach the intellect which generates an "Idea", or help us overcome a "situation". This is the attribute which we should be focused towards. Nothing in the body (which science has discovered so far) can be self, for it is formless. It cannot be anything material, if it is then it may have to be destroyed.
When we fail to understand that every living/non-living being that we see also originated from where we originated, we are living in a Hell. Not only we who will live in Hell, but we will also make others live in the same Hell.
This knowledge that everyone, everything is same makes us live in Heaven for we will not curse anybody, we will not act against anybody. We will think others also as part of myself. Irrespective of whether there is originally a Heaven or Hell (as thought in normal sense), would'nt it be nice to create a Heaven where we live first?
What we should start thinking or start doing is to find a way to oneself. Start off your day with a smile on your lips, "I have survived the night, I am alive". Because as per statistics nearly 2 people die every second. Every second you live moves you closer to death. We should strive to attain a level of mind which is free of thoughts (which are meaningless anyway) which cause certain attributes as ego, anger jealousy etc. Then only we will end up learning the one knowledge that makes everybody happy forever.
I cannot prescribe an answer to the original question which I have raised, its in ones own destiny (thoughts) to analyze and form an opinion about it. Nobody can teach you about yourself. Start learning yourself.
Have a happy day...
